BERKELEY IS FAMOUS AROUND THE GLOBE as a center for academic achievement, scientific exploration, free speech and the arts. Berkeley is a home to a melting pot of people from all age groups and demographics. It consists of college students, artists, highly educated professors and people determined to make a difference and leave their mark on the world and the community around them.  Berkeley is home to the University of California, Berkeley, and the oldest of the University of California system.

In thirty blocks, the daytime population includes some 25,000 office workers, 50,000 UC Berkeley students, faculty and staff, and 5,000 Berkeley High kids.  All of these people coexist and give the city a pulsing rhythm, punctuated by the underground whistle of the BART train, which has its main Berkeley stop under Shattuck at Center Street.

Noted as one of the most politically liberal cities in the nation, Berkeley is identified with rapid social change and political upheaval that characterized the 1960’s. While the 60’s and 70’s were the prime of liberalism in Berkeley, the city continues to reign as one of the most Democratic cities in the United States.

Berkeley’s weather consists of wet winters, dry summers and foggy mornings.  The days are pleasant year round thanks to the cool breezes from the San Francisco Bay.
