Aquatic Park 80 Bolivar Drive, at the foot of Bancroft Way Berkeley, CA 94710 www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/parks/ Aquatic Park provides plenty of opportunities for bird watching, boating, hiking trails and biking trails around the lake. Frisbee Golf in the meadows. There is also a fitness exercise course, “Dream Land for Kids”, a playground featuring extensive wooden castles, walkways and other structures, as well as a habitat for bird and aquatic life. Limited parking is available on the east side of the park. Handicapped/ wheelchair accessible. Open 6:00 am-10:00 pm, unless otherwise posted.

Wildlife sanctuary, sports fields, paved pathways, picnic areas and wide-open meadowlands for Frisbee and kite flying. Hiking and biking allowed. Open daily, dawn to dusk. Home of the Annual International Kite Festival in late July.

Lake Anza Tilden Regional Park Berkeley, CA 94708 (510) 843-2137 Lake Anza is a favorite getaway and a great place for fresh-water swimming. Its sandy beach is open to the sun and sheltered from the wind, with lifeguards posted during the swim season. Wheelchair accessible features, ample parking and picnic grounds. There is a beach access fee to the swim area, which has changing rooms.

  • 010-1-H-12-02-01 Julia Morgan, the architect of the Berkeley City Club, was born in San Francisco.  She was the second of five children born to Charles Bill and Eliza Parmelee Morgan.

  • 010-1-H-12-09-01Julia Morgan and her family moved from San Francisco to Oakland. Eliza Morgan, Julia’s mother, ran the household with a strong hand providing young Julia with a role model of womanly competence and independence.

  • 010-1-H-12-05-01At this time, it was typical for girls to get married after high school and join high society.  Julia was not interested in that life.  She convinced her mother to let her attend UC Berkeley, which had just recently begun to enroll women.  During her second year, she enrolled in the Civil Engineering Department.

  • 1892 - Picture of UC BerkeleyBernard Maybeck, an architect, who was an engineering lecturer during her senior year at UC Berkeley, designed buildings that Morgan admired for their respect of the surrounding topography.  Maybeck mentored Morgan in architecture at his Berkeley home.  He encouraged Morgan to continue her studies at the prestigious Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he had distinguished himself.

  • 1894 Graduation from UC Berkeley [1894 picture]Graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Civil Engineering.  She was the only woman in her engineering class.

  • 1898 Ecole des Beaux Arts [1898 picture]Took the exam for entry into Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, placing 13th out of 376 applicants, and became the first woman ever admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts

  • 1904 California State Seal [1904 picture]Morgan obtained a license to practice architecture in California. She opened her own office in San Francisco, California.

  • 1906 Earthquake 1906 [1907 picture]In the architectural boom following the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, Morgan's career flourished. Her commissions included houses, churches, clubs, banks, schools, hospitals, and stores.

  • 010-7-B-81-05-07Construction begins on the Asilomar Conference Grounds. Asilomar, which means, “refuge by the sea”, was founded by the Young Women’s Christian Association.

  • 010-5-H-72-03-08William Randolph Hearst hired Julia Morgan to design a main building and guest houses for his ranch in San Simeon, California. Mr. Hearst instructed her to build "something that would be more comfortable" than the platform tents which he previously used at the ranch.
